Divorce and custody disputes can be challenging for any family. For children specifically, these situations are often especially stressful, confusing, and emotionally overwhelming. In high-conflict cases, children may feel caught between parents, struggle with loyalty conflicts, or experience anxiety, depression, and behavioral changes.

At the Center for Psychological Growth and Wellness, we specialize in supporting children and families navigating these complex transitions. Located in the heart of Plantation, we serve families throughout Broward County, Florida, including nearby areas such as Davie, Weston, Sunrise, and Fort Lauderdale. We provide individual therapy, child therapy, and adolescent therapy, and offer referrals for psychological evaluations when appropriate. We also have particular expertise in working with children with autism and other neurodevelopmental differences, who may be more sensitive to stress, conflict, and disruptions in routine.

           Why Specialized Support Matters

While traditional therapy can help individuals process emotions, high-conflict custody situations require clinicians with specialized training and experience. Children in these environments may be exposed to ongoing parental conflict, pressure, or resistance dynamics that can influence their perception of one or both parents.

Therapists trained in these areas are equipped to:

Identify behaviors and dynamics that may be harming the child’s relationship with a parent

Help reduce internalized stress from loyalty conflicts

Support healthy, secure parent-child connections in a safe and structured environment

Our clinicians have experience working in forensic and court-involved contexts, ensuring that care is both clinically effective and sensitive to the legal context.

           How We Help

Our individual services provide children with a safe, supportive space to express their feelings, process family changes, and develop effective coping skills.

For children with autism or other neurodevelopmental conditions, we tailor interventions to their unique needs, using strategies that account for sensory sensitivities, communication differences, and emotional regulation challenges.

We also support families navigating divorce-related stressors through structured, developmentally appropriate individual therapy. We work closely with families to support their children at home, helping parents navigate co-parenting dynamics while keeping the child’s well-being at the center.

When appropriate, we recommend reunification-focused therapy, which supports children in rebuilding relationships and spending time with a parent that they may be reluctant or resistant to seeing. This process focuses on restoring trust, improving communication, and strengthening connection over time.

           A Collaborative Approach

We believe that successful outcomes require collaboration. Our approach includes working closely with parents, guardians, and, when appropriate, legal professionals (such as guardian ad litems). We provide regular updates to both parents when possible, and we help families set clear goals for therapy that are time-limited and based on observable progress. This ensures that therapy remains focused, accountable, and in the best interest of the child.

At the Center for Psychological Growth and Wellness, we understand that children are the most important part of any custody case. By combining specialized knowledge, compassionate care, and individualized strategies, we help children feel safe, supported, and empowered during difficult family transitions.

Understanding OCD

Learn what OCD is, its symptoms, common themes, and treatment options. Find expert therapy and support in Plantation, Florida.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a well-recognized mental health condition, yet it is often misunderstood and casually misused in everyday language. In reality, OCD is a serious and often distressing condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Understanding what OCD really is and how it can be treated helps reduce stigma and opens the door to effective support. Seeking the support of a psychological or mental health therapist is a gateway to self compassion and understanding.

In clinical terms, OCD is defined by two main features: obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that result in feelings of anxiety. Compulsions are the repetitive behaviors or mental rituals a person feels driven to do in order to relieve that anxiety or prevent something bad from happening.

OCD can feel like being caught in a cycle that is difficult to break. A thought or fear shows up, it feels overwhelming, and the person feels forced to perform a behavior to quiet it down, only for the cycle to repeat. This leads to relentless thoughts and rituals that interfere with daily life. Therapy can help you become more aware of the cycle and learn strategies to break these habits ultimately reducing the anxious distress associated with obsessions.

           Common Themes in OCD

OCD doesn’t look the same for everyone, but certain themes appear more commonly:

           1. Contamination fears
Someone might worry about germs, illness, or chemicals. This can lead to frequent handwashing, cleaning, or avoiding public spaces altogether.

           2. Doubt and checking

A person may fear they left the stove on, forgot to lock the door, or could cause harm by being careless. They might check appliances, locks, or even replay memories in their mind over and over.

           3. Intrusive thoughts about harm or morality

Unwanted images of hurting someone, blasphemous thoughts, or fears of being a “bad” person can appear. These thoughts don’t reflect the individual’s true values, but they create intense guilt and distress.

           4. Symmetry and “just right” feelings

A person may feel an overwhelming need for objects to be arranged in a certain way or for actions to be repeated until they feel “complete". This is not simply a preference for neatness, but a response to the intense discomfort or anxiety that arises when things don’t feel balanced.

Some individuals become preoccupied with fears about having a serious illness, noticing every small sensation in their body and interpreting it as a sign of disease. This can lead to constant reassurance-seeking, repeated doctor visits, or excessive online research.

The good news is that OCD is treatable. One of the most effective approaches is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a type of cognitive behavioral therapy. ERP involves gradually facing feared situations or thoughts without engaging in compulsions or other self-soothing behaviors. Over time, the brain learns that the anxiety doesn’t last forever and that rituals aren’t needed for safety. Our therapists tailor treatment to your specific needs and can include family members in your treatment if desired to reinforce opportunities for change. Family therapy is a common supplement to individual therapy for people treating OCD, and a necessary component in treating children OCD.

In some cases, medication such as SSRIs can also help reduce symptoms, especially when combined with therapy. Support from family, friends, and mental health professionals can make a major difference as well. We refer to a network of trusted professionals including psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and community mental health centers and collaborate as partners in your mental health.

OCD is not about being extra clean or meticulous. It’s about living with a condition that can feel overwhelming without the right tools. With proper treatment, most people are able to manage their symptoms and build meaningful, fulfilling lives. Our clinicians use evidence based strategies to help you generate lasting change and improved wellbeing.

In the evolving landscape of mental health care, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising tool, offering innovative solutions to longstanding challenges. However, while AI presents opportunities for increased accessibility and personalized interventions, it also raises concerns regarding data privacy, ethical considerations, and the depth of human connection essential for effective therapy.

For instance, AI-enabled therapy support tools have been shown to improve patient engagement and adherence in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) settings, leading to better clinical outcomes. Despite these advantages, the integration of AI into mental health care brings forth significant ethical and privacy challenges. AI systems often rely on collecting and analyzing vast amounts of personal data to function effectively. This dependency raises concerns about data security, consent, and the potential misuse of sensitive information. Instances have been reported where mental health apps shared user data with third parties without explicit consent, leading to targeted advertising and potential breaches of confidentiality. Moreover, the design of AI systems to maximize user engagement can inadvertently lead to addictive behaviors. By continuously learning from user interactions, these systems may prioritize keeping users engaged over promoting genuine well-being, potentially exacerbating mental health issues rather than alleviating them. At CPGW we strive to help you become independent of vices including your DE-vices and offer uniquely in person experiences such as holding a comforting space in the room for you, taking a walk, or offering a hug.

One of the most critical components of effective psychotherapy is the therapeutic alliance—the collaborative and trusting relationship between therapist and client. Research consistently highlights this alliance as a significant predictor of positive treatment outcomes. At the Center for Psycholoigcal Growth and Wellness in Plantation Florida, our therapists bring empathy, intuition, and the ability to navigate complex emotional landscapes, offering personalized support that AI currently cannot replicate.
In-person therapy allows for nuanced understanding and real-time adjustments based on non-verbal cues and emotional responses. Therapists can challenge clients constructively, fostering growth and resilience. This depth of interaction is challenging to achieve with AI, which, despite advancements, lacks genuine emotional intelligence and the capacity for deep relational engagement. At CPGW we pride ourselves on our relationships. Our office provides a warm and safe space for individuals, couples and families to heal and strengthen. For children in particular, the ability to get on their level and play with them and to use non verbal forms of engagement are impossible to achieve in an electronic format.

The reliance on AI for mental health support is not without risks. There have been alarming reports of AI chatbots contributing to adverse outcomes. In one case, a teenager developed a harmful dependency on an AI chatbot, leading to tragic consequences. A 14 year old Florida teenager died by suicide last year after engaging regularly with an AI chatbot. For months he talked to the chatbot about his desire to die while also engaging in sexualized behavior with the artificial partner. Chatbots present as friends, romantic partners, sources of knowledge, advise givers and even therapists. sending a text to his chatbot just before ending his life. Such incidents underscore the limitations of AI in handling complex emotional issues and the potential dangers of unsupervised AI interactions in mental health contexts. If you are worried about someone or your own relationship with electronics, reaching out to a therapist and not AI is a great place to figure that out. Overuse of electronics is strongly associated with increased depression, anxiety and body image concerns in people of all ages but strikingly in young girls and women. At CPGW we offer risk assessments and help people overcome behaviors that are not serving their life goals.

Striking a Balance: Integrating AI with Human Expertise

While AI offers valuable tools for enhancing mental health care, it should complement, not replace, human therapists. A hybrid approach, where AI assists in monitoring progress and providing supplementary support, can enhance treatment accessibility and efficiency. However, the core therapeutic work—building trust, exploring emotions, challenging inconsistencies and facilitating personal growth—remains firmly within the human domain.

Ensuring ethical standards, robust data privacy protections, and clear boundaries for AI applications is essential. By maintaining the primacy of human connection in therapy and leveraging AI's strengths responsibly, we can work towards a mental health care system that is both innovative and deeply humane.

While AI tools can offer immediate support and resources, they lack the nuanced understanding and empathy that human therapists provide. The therapeutic alliance between a patient and a therapist is a critical component of effective treatment, facilitating trust and personalized care. As a parent, you will navigate your child’s emotional, social, and cognitive development, which can be both fulfilling and overwhelming. This journey can be even more complex when co-parenting, managing ADHD-related behaviors, or seeking additional support through counseling and therapy. That’s where our

Parenting—especially when dealing with ADHD, co-parenting struggles, or behavioral concerns—can sometimes feel isolating. Our group provides a supportive space to share experiences, exchange ideas, and learn from one another. Building these connections fosters a sense of community, reducing stress and promoting shared growth.

           Understanding the Food-Mood Connection:

The food we consume can directly influence our mood, emotions, and overall mental well-being. Nutritional deficiencies and imbalances can affect brain chemistry, impacting our energy levels, cognition, and emotional stability. Conversely, consuming a well-balanced diet with essential nutrients can promote optimal brain function, stabilize mood, and improve overall mental health.

The Importance of Nutrition for Mental Health:

Research increasingly demonstrates that nutrition plays a significant role in mental health. Essential nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, magnesium, and zinc, support the production of neurotransmitters and regulate brain function. A deficiency in these nutrients has been linked to an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. At Plantation Psychologists, we emphasize the incorporation of nutrient-rich foods to support mental well-being.

           Gut Health and Mood:

The gut-brain connection is a fascinating area of study, revealing the intricate relationship between our digestive system and our mental health. The gut microbiome, the community of bacteria residing in our intestines, influences brain function, mood regulation, and the production of neurotransmitters. Nurturing a healthy gut through a balanced diet, rich in fiber, prebiotics, and probiotics, can positively impact our mental and emotional well-being.

           Promoting Wellness through Nutritional Guidance:

At Plantation Psychologists, we recognize the importance of a holistic approach to well-being, including nutrition. Lisa Saponaro, Ph.D., and our team of dedicated professionals provide nutritional guidance tailored to each individual's unique needs. Through evidence-based practices, we help clients make informed choices that support optimal mental health, enhance mood stability, and foster overall wellness.

           Nutrition for Life-Long Well-Being:

Integrating nutrition as a fundamental part of your lifestyle promotes long-term well-being. It is important to develop sustainable eating habits that support mental health and overall vitality.

In today's digital age, social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have become increasingly popular among teenagers. While these platforms offer opportunities for self-expression and connection, it is essential for parents to be aware of the potential concerns surrounding their children's social media use. In this blog post, we discuss the impact of TikTok and Instagram on body image, anxiety, and depression among teenagers, drawing on recent research from the American Psychological Association (APA). We also provide insights and recommendations from Lisa Saponaro, a leading psychologist at Plantation Psychologists, located in South Florida, specifically Plantation.

The Influence of Social Media on Body Image:

Social media platforms often promote an idealized and curated version of beauty and body image, which can lead to negative self-comparisons and dissatisfaction among teenagers. The APA study highlights that exposure to idealized body images on platforms like TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram are associated with increased body dissatisfaction, disordered eating behaviors, and a higher risk of developing negative body image perceptions. This is particular true for adolescent girls who receive targeted messages promoting unrealistic and idealized body images.

           Fueling Anxiety and Depression:

The constant exposure to carefully curated images, comments, and social comparison on social media platforms can contribute to heightened anxiety and depressive symptoms among teenagers. The APA study underscores that excessive social media use is linked to increased levels of anxiety and depression. The constant pressure to gain likes, followers, and maintain a perfect online image can create feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.

           Recommendations for Parents:

           1. Open Communication: Foster an open and non-judgmental dialogue with your teenager about their social media use. Encourage them to share their experiences, concerns, and feelings related to these platforms. Provide support and guidance in navigating the challenges that may arise.

           2. Set Healthy Boundaries: Establish clear guidelines for screen time and encourage a healthy balance between online and offline activities. Collaboratively develop a family media plan that ensures designated periods for tech-free activities and quality family time.

           3. Promote Critical Thinking: Encourage your teenager to be critical consumers of social media content. Help them understand the impact of filters, photo editing, and the curated nature of online personas. Teach them to question unrealistic beauty standards and to value authenticity over perfection.

           4. Encourage Positive Online Interactions: Encourage your teenager to engage in positive and meaningful interactions online. Help them identify accounts that promote body positivity, mental health awareness, and empowerment. Encourage them to follow accounts that provide educational content and encourage healthy self-expression.

           5. Be a Role Model: Remember that your own social media use can influence your teenager's behavior. Model healthy habits by maintaining a balanced and mindful approach to your own online engagement.

As parents, it is crucial to be mindful of the potential impact that social media platforms like TikTok, twitter, Snapchat and Instagram can have on our teenagers' well-being. The APA study and expert insights highlight the links between social media use, body image concerns, anxiety, and depression among adolescents. By maintaining open communication, setting healthy boundaries, promoting critical thinking, and encouraging positive online interactions, we can help our teenagers navigate the social media landscape in a way that supports their mental health and overall well-being. Navigating the Risks of Social Media: Insights from the American Psychological Association's Recent Study

In today's digitally connected world, social media has become an integral part of our lives, especially for adolescents and young adults. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter provide a space for individuals to connect, express themselves, and stay updated with the latest trends. However, the American Psychological Association (APA) has recently shed light on the potential risks associated with excessive social media use, particularly for the mental well-being of adolescents. As therapists and counselors at the Center for Psychological Growth and Wellness, led by Dr. Lisa Saponaro, a respected psychologist in South Florida, we find it crucial to address these concerns and explore the implications they hold for the field of psychology.

The Impact on Adolescent Mental Health:

The APA's recent study has revealed several noteworthy findings regarding the impact of social media on adolescent mental health. One key finding suggests that excessive use of social media may contribute to feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety in young individuals. As practitioners at the Center for Psychological Growth and Wellness, Dr. Lisa Saponaro and her team recognize the significance of these findings and are dedicated to providing support and guidance to adolescents who may be struggling with the psychological effects of social media use.

Understanding the Role of Social Comparison:

One of the factors that contribute to the negative impact of social media on mental health is the phenomenon of social comparison. Adolescents often compare their own lives, achievements, and appearances to the carefully curated posts of their peers, leading to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, and a distorted sense of reality. Dr. Lisa Saponaro and the providers at the Center for Psychological Growth and Wellness, emphasize the importance of addressing these comparisons in therapy sessions. Through individual counseling and family therapy sessions, adolescents can gain insights into managing social comparison, developing healthy self-perception, and fostering a sense of self-worth that is not solely dependent on external validation.

           Cyberbullying and Online Harassment:

Another significant risk associated with social media use among adolescents is the prevalence of cyberbullying and online harassment. The APA study highlights that these forms of digital abuse can have severe psychological consequences, including increased rates of depression, anxiety, and even suicidal ideation. Dr. Lisa Saponaro and the team at the Center for Psychological Growth and Wellness are well-equipped to address these challenges. With their expertise in adolescent therapy and counseling, they provide a safe space for young individuals to discuss their experiences, heal from the effects of cyberbullying, and develop effective coping mechanisms to navigate the digital landscape.

The Need for Digital Literacy and Healthy Online Habits:

Given the influence of social media on adolescent mental health, therapists, counselors, and psychologists at the Center for Psychological Growth and Wellness recognize the importance of promoting digital literacy and healthy online habits. Dr. Lisa Saponaro, with her extensive experience and expertise, guides adolescents in developing critical evaluation skills to identify misinformation and navigate social media responsibly. By integrating digital literacy into therapy and counseling sessions, the Center empowers young individuals to make informed decisions about their social media use, ultimately reducing the potential risks to their mental health.

           Conclusion:

As mental health professionals at the Center for Psychological Growth and Wellness, located in the heart of Plantation, FL it is crucial for us to recognize and address the risks associated with social media use, especially among adolescents. The recent study by the American Psychological Association sheds light on the impact of excessive social media use on mental well-being and emphasizes the need for digital literacy and healthy online habits.

As parents how can we help our children and teens cope and make sure they have a successful academic year? Below we have some tips for you!

            1.

           Organize, organize, organize!

Children thrive on structure and organization. Create a visual schedule for them to follow. Include important due dates, school events, and when extracurricular activities will occur. Allow them to add what is important! Giving them an idea of what to expect during the school year may not give anxiety a chance to grow.

            2.

            Positive affirmations to build confidence

Load your child up with positive affirmations they can remember all day long! Encourage them to face difficult challenges, work through strong emotions, and build up their self-esteem. Some examples of positive affirmations include: “I can do hard things!” “I believe in myself and my goals,” “Obstacles help me grow and learn,” and “It is okay if I make mistakes.”

            3.

            Help them emotionally ground

Using grounding techniques can help your child or teen in times of stress and distress. The five senses grounding technique is our favorite! Have your child describe 5 things they see, 4 things they feel, 3 things they hear, 2 things they smell, and 1 thing they can taste. This can help them get back into the present moment and feel a sense of calm. You can also practice deep breathing and use sensory toys or fidgets as well.

            4.

            Create a routine

Remember how we said children thrive on structure? Well, here is another way you can provide that. Create a morning, after school, or evening routine (you can do all three!). Creating a predictable routine can give your child a sense of stability. Meditate, read a book, go to the park, create a silly dance, make a funny song, have a calming lavender bath, or set aside time to cuddle. Be sure to build 8 hours of sleep into their routine. Having a simple routine can help your child during times of transition.

            5.

Positive reinforcement goes a long way!

Imagine going to work and not getting paid. Would you still go? Luckily, children can feel rewarded by something much smaller (and cheaper) than your average paycheck. Provide options of what they can earn for different behaviors at school, specific grades on assignments, or managing their homework load! Watch a new movie, get them their favorite ice cream, fruit, or candy, take them to a water park, or give them an extra hour of video games. Reward the choices you appreciate.

            6.

Be specific about the struggles your child or teen has

If your student struggles with particular subjects or skills, inform their teachers about what will help them. Providing your child’s teachers with tools that you know work for your child will increase their chance for a successful year.

Get involved with the academic team for your child or teen

If your student struggles academically despite your efforts, maybe setting them up with an academic plan is the next step. Speak to the guidance counselor or resource officer about psychological testing or tutoring options. Having an individualize education plan (IEP) or 504 plan can be extremely helpful in ensuring your child’s success in school.

Collaborative Divorce

In comparison with typically conflictual divorces, collaborative divorce offers a more cooperative option and puts the power to reach decisions and agreements in the hands of the people concerned. In a collaborative divorce, both parties have an attorney, and both are dedicated to helping the parties reach a mutually beneficial arrangement, unlike in an adversarial divorce when each party represents themselves. Couples may feel confident in knowing that their legal interests are being protected and that their family, not the court, will ultimately make the final choices as a result of this. In contrast to mediation, in the event that the collaborative process is abandoned or proves unsuccessful, the collaborative professionals are bound to a collaborative outcome and are prohibited from taking part in legal actions.

But just like mediation, the collaborative method helps family members take charge of their situation, finds original solutions, and is a less costly divorce procedure than going to court. A loving, supporting, and caring connection between parents and children is supported by the ideal resolution. All parties can go from a collaborative divorce with the assurance that they will only sign an agreement that they feel acceptable, even if it is unusual for neither side to obtain all they desire.

The purpose of the collaborative approach is to guarantee that choices are made with your long-term goals in mind by defining values and finding common ground. All parties involved in a collaborative divorce must act in good faith and with honesty, with the best interests of the whole family as their first priority.

Families with children may benefit most from collaborative divorce since the outcomes are less likely to be relitigated down the road. It is linked to generally decreased parent-child conflict, which is, as we all know, best for the children. The process of Collaborative Divorce is created with the best interests of the children in mind, assisting in making sure their requirements are met. Psychologists frequently play the position of Child Specialist in the collaborative process, in addition to being divorce coaches. As a neutral mental health practitioner, the Child Specialist has particular training in family structures and child development as it relates to divorce and adjustment. In order to help the children during the divorce and to better understand their needs and wishes, this expert may meet with them one-on-one.

Children are similar to adults in that they experience stress, frustration, and disappointment. Recent studies suggest that parents underestimate the amount of stress in their children’s lives (APA Stress Survey: Children are more stressed than parents realize). The thoughts and feelings associated with life challenges may lead child to display social, emotional, behavioral problems. Some warning signs that your child may be having problems include: a drop in grades, school conduct referrals, social, withdrawal, moodiness, unrealistic worry and engagement in high risk behaviors such as alcohol with drug use. Parents who want to discover why their child acts out can seek answers from a caring child therapist at our practice. We provide an understanding and supportive environment that enables a child to speak freely about his or her fears, feelings, and emotions and help you to discover the root causes of social, emotional, and behavioral problems and replace them with positive coping skills.

The Center for Psychological Growth and Wellness features Florida licensed psychologists who specializes in family and child therapy. We seek to build a relationship with each child and gain insight into why they think and behave the way they do. In this process, we discover how we can help the client (child and parents) understand the root cause of the negative behavior and how to make behavior changes that will improve family communication and household balance. Children may act out because they are seeking attention, control, independence and approval. Stressors, such as changes in family dynamics, grief and trauma can erode a person’s coping mechanisms and highlight the need for help.

We provide individual and family therapy. We can meet with family members together and separately in order to gain insight into family dynamics and communication styles. We can utilize the family’s strengths and help them work through problem areas. We seek to teach families how to build stronger bonds and positive communication skills. Children and families often lack the communication skills to properly express their thoughts and emotions. We can help you improve this area for personal growth and a return to peaceful and happy family relationships.

In a world bustling with noise, responsibilities, and constant stimulation, it's easy to lose sight of our own mental well-being. Amidst life's challenges, stresses, and uncertainties, it's essential to have a sanctuary where one can delve into the depths of their mind, unravel tangled emotions, and find solace in self-discovery. At the Center for Psychological Growth and Wellness, individual psychotherapy serves as that sanctuary, offering a safe space for individuals to embark on a journey of healing and personal growth.

Individual psychotherapy, often referred to simply as therapy or counseling, is a collaborative process between a trained therapist and a client. It provides a confidential and supportive environment for individuals to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a non-judgmental setting. Through empathetic listening, insightful questioning, and evidence-based techniques, therapists at the Center for Psychological Growth and Wellness work hand in hand with clients to navigate the complexities of their inner world.

One of the core principles guiding individual psychotherapy at our center is the belief in the inherent resilience and potential for growth within each individual. No matter the struggles one may face – whether it be anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, or life transitions – therapy offers a path towards healing and empowerment. By fostering self-awareness, resilience, and coping skills, clients can cultivate a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

The therapeutic journey is highly personalized, tailored to meet the unique needs and goals of each individual. Therapists at the Center for Psychological Growth and Wellness utilize a variety of therapeutic modalities, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness-based approaches, and more. By drawing from diverse theoretical orientations and evidence-based practices, therapists adapt their approach to best suit the preferences and strengths of each client.

Moreover, individual psychotherapy is not just about addressing problems; it's also about nurturing strengths and fostering personal growth. Through the therapeutic process, clients often discover new insights, develop healthier coping strategies, and uncover untapped potentials within themselves. Whether it's gaining clarity about one's values and goals, improving communication skills, or enhancing self-esteem, therapy empowers individuals to lead more fulfilling and meaningful lives.

One of the unique aspects of individual psychotherapy at our center is the emphasis on holistic well-being. Recognizing the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit, therapists take a holistic approach to treatment, addressing not only psychological issues but also factors such as physical health, lifestyle, and social support. By addressing the whole person, therapy promotes balance, resilience, and overall wellness.

At the Center for Psychological Growth and Wellness, we understand that taking the first step towards therapy can be daunting. That's why we strive to create a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment where clients feel heard, understood, and supported. Our team of experienced therapists is dedicated to providing compassionate care and empowering clients to embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing.

In conclusion, individual psychotherapy at the Center for Psychological Growth and Wellness offers a transformative journey towards self-discovery, healing, and personal growth. Through a collaborative and personalized approach, therapists empower clients to navigate life's challenges, cultivate resilience, and unlock their full potential. If you're ready to embark on a journey of self-exploration and empowerment, we invite you to take the first step towards healing with us. Your journey towards psychological growth and wellness begins here.

There may be times when a family changes in dynamics or seems to be stuck in a pattern of reacting to one another that is counterproductive. Sometimes children can present with issues that are found to have their roots in family issues, or a family may be affected by a child’s illness or disability, here a combination of individual and family therapy may be useful.

All families have strengths that they can use to overcome their areas of difficulty. The goal of family therapy is to direct the family to finding their own solutions. During the sessions, family members reveal their methods of interaction with one another. This provides rich opportunity to give and receive feedback in a safe and supportive atmosphere. Family members learn new communication skills and identify patterns in former communication styles that served as triggers to escalate family difficulties.

We may explore family roles, values, rules and behavior patterns in order to identify areas that contribute to conflict. Together, we will identify the family’s and the member’s positive attributes and utilize these strengths to work through the problem areas.

Group therapy is a powerful and highly effective method of addressing interpersonal issues. Problems that are well-suited to group therapy include: patterns of relationship dysfunction, social skills and communication enhancement, and issues related to intimacy and trust. When people enter group therapy and interact freely with other group members, they often recreate the difficulties that brought them to therapy in the first place. While interpersonal issues are often initially addressed during individual therapy, group therapy offers multiple relationships to assist the individual in further growth and problem solving.

People who make good candidates for group therapy may have:

            Desire for personal growth

            Shyness

            Interpersonal difficulties

            Social anxiety

            Have problems “fitting in”

            Problematic behaviors

            Conflict with coworkers or peers

            Difficulties with assertiveness

            Feel misunderstood by others

            Frequent feelings of anger

Patterns of family or relationship problems

            Problems with trust and intimacy

            Existential concerns

Group therapy provides the unique opportunity to observe and reflect on your own and others’ interpersonal skills and to give and receive feedback in an interpersonal context that more accurately reflects real life. Under the skilled direction of the therapist, the group is able to give support, offer alternatives, or gently confront the person. Through this process, insight is gained, alternative behaviors are learned, and the person develops new and more effective ways of relating to others.

Some of the benefits of group therapy may include:

            Hope

            Guidance

            Social skills building

            Catharsis

            Existential factors

            Interpersonal learning

            Resolution of family issues

            Altruism

While most people have some fear of opening up to others, after a few sessions members usually find that they are able to open up in the group. Members learn through active participation as well as observation. Typically groups consist of 6 to 10 members that meet weekly for 90 minutes. Groups range in duration, from 10 weeks to one year. A minimum of one individual evaluation session is required of all candidates for group therapy in order to determine if group therapy could be an effective approach and which group would be most beneficial to the specific goals of the client. Individuals who are suicidal, homicidal, psychotic, or in the midst of a major crisis are typically not good candidates for group therapy until their emotional and behavior states have stabilized.

Couples Counseling

Maintaining a healthy and long lasting relationship requires work and effort in the form of compromise for both parties involved. The goal of couples counseling is to help couples understand and resolve their conflicts and improve their relationships. Couples therapy may be sought during any phase of the relationship from pre-marital to dissolution. During sessions, the couple is provided with tools to communicate and problem solve more effectively. Efforts are made to restore trust, rebuild respect and appreciation, and recover intimacy for one another while helping each partner get their needs met. In the case of divorce counseling, couples are directed towards a peaceful and respectful separation. When children are involved, their needs are considered and foremost.

Unfortunately, most relationships aren’t perfect. Each person brings his or her own ideas, values, opinions and personal history into a relationship, and they don’t always match their partners’. Despite these differences, relationships can be one of the most rewarding aspects of a person’s life. In fact, connection to others, and the ultimate connection of a loving relationship, is commonly considered to be a core factor in determining happiness.

Couples therapy provides a neutral third party to assist a couple in understanding and resolving their conflicts in order to improve the relationship. This type of therapy may vary in length from a few sessions to several months, and the amount of work will be directly proportional to the perceived perception and duration of the problem.

Psychological Testing is an evaluation that may be useful to clarify or provide additional information to diagnoses. Psychological Testing may be sought for a number of reasons.

          Testing services include:

Giftedness / IQ / Cognitive Ability

            Psychoeducational Testing

            Attention-Deficit Disorder / ADHD

Pervasive Development Disorders / Autism Spectrum

            Social & Emotional Well-being

            Personality Testing

            Ability to Parent

            Career Readiness/Fit

Giftedness testing, or IQ testing, consists of a test of cognitive ability such as the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) or the Standford Binet Intelligence Test, Fifth Edition (SB-5). This type of testing may be used to determine if your child is eligible to receive advanced or gifted programing. Tests of cognitive ability reveal an individual’s specific learning strengths and weaknesses, which may be useful in creating a learning program.

Psychoeducational testing is often recommended when a child is struggling to keep up with academic demands, has been retained, or appears to have unusual difficulty with a specific subject. Psychoeducational testing is used to diagnose learning disabilities and provide recommendations for educational planning and special testing accommodations. Psychoeducational testing generally consists of a test of cognitive ability, an achievement test, and an evaluation of emotional and behavioral functioning.

ADHD testing is useful when determining if a student’s academic difficulties are the result of an attention problem, behavioral problem or underlying emotional issue. ADHD testing may include parent and teacher questionnaires, self-report measures, tests of attention, and personality inventories. This type of testing is often conducted in conjunction with some psychoeducational testing so that a more thorough and individually tailored academic plan can be recommended.

Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), also known as Autism Spectrum Disorders, are generally present from an early age and affect one’s ability to relate to others and/or their environment normally. Testing for these disorders generally includes an in-depth interview with parents and teachers, a measure of adaptive functioning, standardized parent and teacher questionnaires, and often portions of the psychoeducational battery. Research demonstrates that early diagnosis and intervention with PDD results in better long term prognosis.

Social and emotional testing, as well as personality testing can be useful when making diagnoses, understanding underlying factors contributing to problems, and making appropriate treatment recommendations. Personality testing is also used by employers to determine appropriateness for certain type of jobs, and by courts when determining ability to parent and competency issues.

Have confidence that you will receive accurate test results conveyed in a meaningful fashion with appropriate recommendations. All testing is conducted with the most recent versions of tests available. Each test used meets the local school board requirements of an outside evaluator. Individuals may wish to have the evaluator discuss testing results with outside parties (e.g., schools, teachers, etc) in order to assist with academic planning. Confidentiality is maintained except where provided by law and results will not be disseminated to outside parties without your express written permission or as required by law.

There are occasions when psychological testing may be court ordered or requested of you by a third party (e.g., school, employer, etc.).
